Will gladly concede I have been played by this book. Have always loved magpies - their innate mischievousness, stately posture and beautiful song - so beguiling. The narrative a wonderful blend of humour and never overdone pathos pulls the heartstrings just so. Beautiful strong family and characteristically enchanting bird presented in coffee table book format with resplendent photography makes for an absolute winner. Will buy this one and dip into again and again.

4.5 stars. Beautiful pictures. Painful but wonderfully written story of the terrible thing that happened to this family and how Penguin the Magpie helped them through some of their worst moments.
What a beautiful book. Devastating and heartwarming I cried at the tragedy of Sam Blooms accident and I laughed at the antics of Penguin, the Magpie that the Bloom family rescued. Cameron Blooms photos capture such special moments with Penguin and the family that it draws you right in to Sam's journey, coming to terms with her injuries and healing alongside Penguin. Truly heartwarming and special story.
Heart warming and inspiring. But not a must read.
Definitely a tear jerker. The epilogue is the best bit with her thoughts on coping with a traumatic and life-changing accident. No being injured & paralysed has not made her a better person: I wonder how many people expect that it should.
This is a cute and heart-felt story. The pictures were truly gorgeous and added to the atmosphere while reading. I was expecting a bit more text and background information - especially on Magpies - but maybe that's just the biologist in me.
The proloque felt quite overdone.

A very moving story - although I liked the prologue, epilogue and letter by Sam Bloom better than the text of the "actual" book because of all the information.
The photos are lovely and I regret a little getting the paperback because the photos are sure better in a higher quality edition
