I listened to this on audio and I’m so glad I did. Because the book is written in verse, audio enhances it so much. I was well and truly immersed in the world of the characters when I was listening, and didn’t get distracted like I have done with so many other fiction audiobooks. I will definitely be seeking out this author’s other work. Her characters felt so real and so raw and her narration carried so much emotion off the page. I adored it.

I cried too much reading this book to be able to write a coherent review yet.

It is a heart-breaking, healing, beautiful book that should be on every TBR list.

Thus far my favourite verse novel I've read. With a limited canvas of words, Acevedo manages to portray a tapestry of rich characters, complex and emotional relationships and a tightly wound plot.
I loved the sense of culture that the novel had, with sprinklings of Spanish dialogue and vocabulary to befit the atmosphere of the Dominican Republic.
