If your only notions of Kipling's "The Jungle Books" are the film or disney versions, you're definitely in for a surprise. The stories go farther and deeper than any film could give full justice to. A product of its time, the book does have its moments of racism and ethnocentrism that cannot easily be protrayed in modern adaptations. But, the stories are entertaining and keep the reader engaged

It was interesting to see the source material for the beloved Disney animated feature, but the book itself is a bit lackluster and hasn't aged that well. The basic story of Mowgli is there, but Disney definitely took some liberties by adding characters, taking out some of the killing and brutal laws of the jungle.
The other stories in the book are a bit dull and uninteresting in my opinion.
I'm definitely with Orwell on this one, Kipling is for sure a staunch British Imperialist and it shows in his writing.

I have no doubt I would have enjoyed this book more when I was younger.
Even when taking into account the age of the book I couldn't warm to characters and found aspects of the stories rather distasteful. As a lover of reptiles I had a particular issue with the story of Rikki Tikki Tavi and the negative attitude towards snakes that was portrayed.

Depictions of brown people by white colonizers are, of course, problematic.

The first time I met Mowgli was when I was very small. I must have been only around two years old and I had watched the Disney film. I HATED it. But when I realized that it was based off of a book (when I was around five or six) I immediately went to the library and checked out both Jungle Books. It was then that I fell in love.
Kipling is very problematic racially and politically. Throughout these books it is easy to pick up on Kipling's inherent prejudice. Through Mowgli the reader is introduced to a "superstitious" and often "savage" race of people.
In spite of Kipling's racism this is still one of my favorite book series. Mowgli, his friends, and his adventures still make me smile, cringe, and cry (especially at certain character deaths). The Jungle Books is something that can be enjoyed by anyone whether they are adults or children. I'd recommend these books to anyone who loves an adventure and characters who, while flawed and occasionally severe, get right up inside you and live there for years to come.

I read this in Croatian so I didn't really understand that much. I think I'll re-read this in Swedish.
