Maybe a 3.5. I've seen The Room and The Disaster Artist before reading this book. I think if I hadn't seen one or both I might've been a bit lost. But I actually liked this book until I didn't--while Tommy is obviously on the spectrum, Greg apparently isn't. So he befriended Tommy, took his apartment for nothing, knew what he was getting into, then made fun of him (and then tried to be nice at the end) to the point that he humiliated him in a book...which turned into a movie. Greg is not a good friend. Furthermore, while the movie is horrible in a bad way--the acting can't be blamed on Tommy completely. Greg is not holding the movie together by any means, and makes up for it by blaming his "friend" who he hates...but enjoys...but wait, he hates him again...but I swear he's a nice guy....but wait. Ugh. The book feels more like a pity party for Greg not making it in his career, but his reasoning seems off. He doesn't blame himself ever. He doesn't think that maybe its his acting. Instead he blames his friend, someone who yes, obviously has obsessive traits and needs help, but again Greg befriended him. While I laughed at times, and found much of the book amusing and I couldn't put it down, I also felt like the author is just a jerk. I don't know if any of that makes sense.
I never expected to love this book. I thought it'd be this fun thing that I'd sort of slog through but Greg's narration of Wiseau and the making of The Room is both so real and so surreal. There are a lot of mysteries solved yet so many more left unsolved by the end of the book. The events that happen are messy, mean at times and just plain strange but it's captivating the entire time. There's an unexpected depth and human element with this whole enterprise that you never get from watching The Room. There's something so... American. The American Dream and the ideals of being an American are so varied and odd yet is such a powerful concept especially for immigrants.
I cannot wait for the movie.

(Regardez The Room !)

The stranger-than-fiction true story of the enigma that is Tommy Wiseau and his relationships during the creation of his Magnum Opus, the Room. Hilarious, honest, and fascinating, offering insight into the creative process of those obsessed with legacy.
This book was truly a joy to read. The Room is one of my guilty pleasures (although I can't watch it without the Rifftrax dub playing over it) and reading the making-of process of this movie was fascinating. I always thought Tommy Wiseau was a giant lumpy weirdo - and he really is, I found, after reading this book. Disaster Artist definitely endeared me to Tommy. He's a weirdo, sure, but he's a weirdo that just wants love and acceptance, something I think that we all can relate to. The writing was clever and funny, a nice change of pace from the drivel I've been subjecting myself to lately. (I'm sorry, brain, please forgive me.)
I heard that James Franco is going to make this into a movie and he's going to play Tommy Wiseau. I'm probably going to explode when that happens.

greg, my guy, how did you write an entire 11 hour memoir that left me with more questions than answers??
There are strange and wonderful artistic opportunities to be had if you befriend and enable mysterious fabulists. Greg's story is surreal and enthralling, and I'm excited to see the movie version.

Years ago, when I was still taking my pre-med, PewDiePie's latest upload appeared on the top of my YT feed. The thumbnail was hilarious and I got curious. Glad I discovered one of the most iconic movies in history. Dang, The Room was really hilariously bad and funny. Few months later, a trailer for The Disaster Artist was released. I didn't know there was a novel written by Mark's actor.
Now that I finally got round to finishing this amazing recollection of his life behind the scenes, my enjoyment for the movie increased a lot. Tommy Wiseau was and is still, inconceivable. This book was written well.
