Have you ever picked up a book and thought you've read it before? When I got to chapter 2 in this one, I was pretty sure that I read it on a trip 6 years ago, however, I wasn't 100% sure and couldn't remember how it ended so carried on. Do I ever wish I had not. This book was so boring that it literally put me to sleep in the middle of the day multiple timesš“ I feel like I reread the same thoughts from one of the characters multiple times. This easily could have been half the length & still might have been too long. All the characters were annoying and nothing really happened the whole book?! This book was not it for me.
I kept reading it because I wanted to watch the Netflix adaptation... I watched 2 episodes and then gave up on that because it was clear that also was NOT for me.

I loved this book! I love books about law, and this one is a court room drama about sexual assault. Itās been forever since Iāve read a book that changes between perspectives, and I thought the author did a fantastic job oh that too.
It was interesting, a few little twists were revealed, and you were invested in the story. Although I didnāt love the ending, it did wrap it up quite well. Glad this book finally got me out of my reading slump

Even though itās a fictional story, I imagine it mimics a lot of sexual assault encounters and the āhe said she saidā stories that follow. It was enlightening to read the chapters from James POV and the logic that he uses to confirm that āheās not a bad guyā, because Iāve heard similar arguments be used by real men who are accused of sexual crimes and in the book it sounds so ridiculous that he believes he is innocent, but in real life I have found myself believing the accused.
I bought this book last year on sale because it looked good and then decided to throw it into my rotation when i found out Netflix made it a mini series and I (finally) wanted to be able to read the book BEFORE I watched it on film.
My only critique is that I think the author āset the sceneā a little too long sometimes in describing a room or building that the characters were only in for like 2 speaking lines. I realize that may be an unpopular opinion, but I found myself just skimming over paragraphs trying to get to the good stuff.
Also, there were some British terms and cultural references that I had to Google to understand what was going on
