The thought that this is the last book in one of my most favorite series of all time is just destroying me. And I kind of think my heartbreak hindered my enjoyment of this book.

The adventures of Emily and Wendell continue to it's most logical course (After Emily had so cleverly made space for Wedell to reclaim his throne in "The map of the otherlands ). We are thrown right into the Silva Lupi as both Wendell and Emily try to adjust to new roles and a new threat that has the power to destroy the kingdom and Wendell, himself.

Emily flits between the fairy and the mortal realm; relying on her old friends and books she begins to unravel the mystery of what's happening to Wendell's realm. Our heroine is as determined and clever as ever at immersing herself in fairy lore and unraveling all the threads of the threat/problem at hand.

I was delighted to see some of our old familiar characters returning in all their glory. (Snowbell is a treasure)Lilja, Margaret, Ariadne, Farris and Poe all make return appearances in this story and we get a little more information on Wendell's family history and we get to see more of his Step mother, Arna; his step Uncle's Lord Taran and Callum and we meet his half sister, Delilah.

This is the heaviest of the three books in the series because it deals with a lot of politics; and Wendell's normal flamboyance seems a bit muted under the duress of establishing himself in a realm that still has a lot of turmoil surrounding it. And I think the world building took a bit of a backseat in this one because of that, and the character development.

Despite all of that, we still get little glimpses of the Wendell we know from the prior two books.
Wendell's first inclination upon waking from the dead was, naturally, to throw a party.

Yep, that's still our Wendell.

All in all, it was a fitting and optimistic end to the series. But the thing that gets me is that we're all there to see Wendell and Emily off on their new adventures/life; but the plot leaves so many threads open and their story is truly only beginning. THIS DOESN'T NEED TO BE THE END!

I understand we can't go with them, but I want to
and I'm still borderline seething that we, the readers, can't
But I'll get over it. lol

I'm going to miss them all so much. Emily Wilde will forever be one of my favourite protagonists and Heather Fawcett's writing is *chef's kiss*

The character development was meticulous and folded in neatly with the plot. It was neither too slow nor too fast. A staple of the cozy fantasy genre fs.

I love all of these books, they're unique and each one is a delight. The way the story is told, how Emily solves the problems before her, and her relationship with Wendell are all superb. I'll miss these characters and the world Fawcett created.
adventurous funny

Such a delight. I love Emily’s nerdy glee over new scholarly discoveries, the grumpy-sunshine romance, and all her adventures in and around Faerie.
