After reading through the first volume – I find the book entertaining. Both, the story(ies) and the language itself are simply captivating. The book also gives you a chance to explore some of the background, some of what the author (and perhaps his age) thinks – through both: what he says and what he does not say, taking it for granted. I find that priceless – it is the kind of thing you would never get from contemporary historical fiction (however well written), for an instance.

Be warned though: if your previous reading has been limited to modern novels, you may find the style – with its compact language and rather epic nature – unfamiliar, and perhaps at times even trying.

Compelling tales of another time. The characters have so many virtues and foibles seen even today.

I'm done, I'm done, I'm DONE!!

Holy smokes, this one took me a year and a half to read and I barely understood any of the stories in the 800+ pages, but I am still so happy to have been able to complete my goal of reading it. Oh my, what a journey!

Gave up after 400ish pages, the Tristram section made me lose all interest. So many of these stories could have been reduced to nothing if the characters were happy to say their name when asked for it.
