5 stars because he's a really good writer. I liked how his questions led to more questions, rather than answers. I'm not a Whole Foods or a TJ shopper and the "fun" or altruistic supermarket experience is pretty much lost on me. I gravitate towards low prices in ass-bump stores (if you've been in NYC, you'll know what I'm talking about) like Market Basket and C-Town, but there is probably something behind my being attracted to them. Lots to think about here, and I had no idea how tiny the stores' profit margins are.

This book isn’t an exposé as much as it is a confirmation that human behavior is fucked up. The stories the author gathers add up to the muddy mess of a system with no real right or wrong way to navigate. It’s just a continuous migration of injustice that is never experienced by those who are not poor. Shortening supply chains seems like a good step to me, but it isn’t explored in this book.

I wanted to stop reading during the first part of the book but I was already almost two hours into the audiobook and basically had to brute force myself through it. I think the individual sections are interesting, covering the different areas and obvious deep research. It was just too much. Too boring. would not recommend….. Sorry…

Not exactly what I was expecting. I agree with some other reviews that say a title change wouldn't hurt. But it was interesting. Less of a focus on grocery stores directly and more a collection of slices of different aspects of food supply, which I did appreciate.
I had to slow the speed down to .9x because he reads /so/ fast. There were still some times I think I could have gotten away with slowing it down more.
