This short middle grade book has beautiful full color illustrations. It’s simple and wholesome. It’s got a reclusive lighthouse keeper, a shipwreck, coming of age, art, WWII, friendship across generations, and a great author’s note. I’m not quite sure what the ideal audience would be, as most kids would be bored. However, as an adult reading it, I found it just lovely.
Tell me why this book I got for my nephew made me cry! I was reading to him at bedtime and even though he’d fallen fast asleep, I had to keep reading till the end.

There is something really special about light houses. I was very lucky and grew up near one so when it was really foggy I could hear it quietly from my bedroom window. As an adult I feel very nastaligic about lighthouses and they always bring to mind the warmer months when I could listen to it with my window open at night. Because of this, I always crave books about lighthouses in the Spring.
The Puffin Keeper was a sweet and beautiful story about a boy who is rescued from a shipwreck by the lighthouse keeper whom he has an immediate connection with. He goes back to visit and they rescue an injured puffin together. It is so sweet and heart warming. I read it on my kobo so the images were black and white but still so charming. Highly recommend for adults and children alike.

Gosh where to start with reviewing this wonder of a book? This is a truly moving book that will stay with you long after you’ve read it. It embraces themes of hope, friendship, conservation, art, war, family, reading and a love of lighthouses and puffins. Having adored every carefully chosen word throughout this story and marvelled over the glorious artwork throughout (some beautiful full colour spreads in particular), this book will really pull you in, pull your heartstrings and move a soulful reader. When I learned about the inspiration behind the story - Allen Lane, the founder of Puffin books - I am in awe of the tasteful storytelling of Morpurgo who has woven details of Allen Lane’s life into this enchanting tale but still created a whole new (not biographical) story. It’s nothing short of genius.
An early chapterbook that would be perfect for readers that have outgrown I CAN READ books. It is also an enjoyable read aloud. I read it to my 3yr and 5 yr and they loved it. The illustrations and story are a perfect match.
A short, quick and easy read. It’s like a beginning chapter book. Not my favorite writing from Michael Morpurgo, we liked Beowulf much better… But the pictures are what make this book a masterpiece. They are detailed and gorgeous. Man, I would love to paint like that. 3 stars for the story, 5 stars for the pictures, evens out to 4 stars.
