What did I just read?!?! This novel had everything, and the fact that it was all based off the true life of this truly amazing woman had me singularly focused on getting to the end. The depiction of this inimitable woman was brought to life by the author's insightful details. I love it so, so much!

-0.25pt from Frozen River. It was definitely not as good.

Lawhon always gives us a fantastic cast of female-supporting male characters. Again, the husbands - with their steadfastness and silent convictions - stole the show for me. I also liked the writing of this: historical fiction sometimes feel too heavy and drawn out, but this felt really accessible and I found the pages flying by. Also loved the gradual reveal about how the past built up into the present: we got to see how she came to be "Duckie", how "Denden" came to be.

Improvements that are required: For a book centred around Code names, the chronology of identities/codenames could be made more obvious. Especially since we are bounced between 2 timelines, a more obvious touch would be required. The FMC was a 1-dimensional femme fatale character while Frozen River's FMC had more nuances to her. The occasional mention of overly modern phrases that ruined the historical vibe of this story. It was jarring to be reading about gym classes (what I associate to be a very American modern education concept) in a WW2 novel.
