This is a well written book.  The author does an excellent job of presenting the main characters emotions.  It is a hard read because it covers a lot of hard emotional topics.  I would have liked less language and sexual references.  While both are mild, it is not something I enjoy in reading; thus I give the book three stars.

Moving, beautiful novel in verse about how sometimes you have to become who you’re meant to be despite whatever obstacles stand in your way, even when those obstacles might be the people who are supposed to love and care about you the most. A quick read, this book moved me through every conceivable emotion and the relationship between the mother and daughter, while not exactly like my own, definitely resonated with me.

This book is absolute perfection. The audiobook is impeccable. I don’t live in New York. I’m a white middle class young woman from the Appalachian mountains. But there was something so relatable in the way x related with Christianity and the way she experiences her first love. Her relationship with her mother. It all spoke to the 16 year old girl in me who was grappling with love and sex and who she was all while surrounded by a family that was pious and knowing she was different. The writing is beautiful. The story is heartwarming and heartbreaking. I laughed, I cried, I felt  angry for X. If I could make it everyone read this book I would.

As always, this is one of my favorite books. Elizabeth Acevedo is an amazing poet and reader, and this audiobook is literally fantastic.

Xiomara has a loud voice that people won't hear, and a body that takes too much room for others' comfort. She is a bubbling mess of emotions, torn between a religious mother, her Dominican heritage, and the words that keep blossoming under her pen and defying what she's been taught all her life. This book is her journal, in verse, brimming with restricted power. Elizabeth Acevedo offers a raw insight into a high school girl's life that reads like a defiant shout. It's an immensely powerful read, with its cut lines tumbling down the pages. I'm impressed by the author, and also by the translator, who also writes novels in verse and has wonderfully done justice to Acevedo's bright prose.
