I absolutely loved this. This was truly a beautifully written peak into the life of a young Biracial woman. Her coming of age and dealing with sexism, religious trauma, her mother's expectations and abusive language. Coming to terms with who she is and not letting anyone silence her even her mother. This was hard to read and so heartbreaking beautiful to experience. I am happy that I got to read this and even more so that I got the audiobook to hear this book directly from the author.

This is a well written book.  The author does an excellent job of presenting the main characters emotions.  It is a hard read because it covers a lot of hard emotional topics.  I would have liked less language and sexual references.  While both are mild, it is not something I enjoy in reading; thus I give the book three stars.

Oh my god, this book was so good. I’ve realized recently how much I really love a good coming of age story (might be my favorite type of story, honestly), and this is an amazing one. I’m not a poet, but I’m a writer and this made me feel things.

A good book that wasnt to my taste.

this is a pretty well-written book. it develops a well-written story about a teenage girl struggling with family, religion, body dysphoria, and more. it was objectively good. it just wasnt for me, something i knew going into it (modern/contemporary books dont tend to be my cup of tea, but i was trying to branch out a bit), and i will admit, the final chapters really hooked me in, but it otherwise wasnt to my taste. the characters are well written, but frankly, i dont find very many of them likable. X is fine, and that's the only perspective you see, but the other characters (her mother in particular) are... something. well written, but REALLY not all that likable.
Her mother genuinely made me so angry; and while that's definitely a sign of good storytelling, i don't think i was meant to be as genuinely upset at her as i was. i did not expect her to be as downright emotionally abusive as she was, intentionally or not. abuse is abuse, and the ending really upset me, especially how easy to forgive X was.

Reading this was an incredible experience. I loved hearing Acevedo perform in the audiobook, and there were so many poems in this book that gave me chills as I listened to her read it. I’ve never read anything that so unabashedly deconstructs religion without shaming those who are religious. This is a lesson to everyone that our voices matter and we should use our voices to make a difference. But it’s also a lesson in knowing when to let others speak and not speaking over those who are consistently overlooked.
