It was slow and quite depressing, but it somehow kept me coming back for more.

I went into this book not knowing what it was about and I’ve come out even more confused. I thought we would discover he had a mental illness or this was all a breakdown because of his dead brother. It was an interesting read, and I did want to keep reading it to find out what happens. However nothing really does happen, and it’s just a long monologue of Holden describing ‘phonies’ or getting a headache or feeling sick or not being in the mood for something. After I’ve now looked up what it is actually supposed to be about, it does make a lil bit more sense, it is just supposed to show Holden navigating adulthood and trying to grasp onto the last bit of childish innocence and youth. I especially like the metaphor of ‘catcher in the rye’, as Holden wants to save the children falling off the field, which is a metaphor for adulthood. A very weird but interesting read?

i saw someone saying people who like this book think holden is a misunderstood warrior poet........... i do not think that! I think he is an annoying angsty teen!! just because you like a book doesn't mean you think the main character is a perfect or even good person. i will defend this book forever and ever. i once started crying while discussing this book in an english class because i got so much out of it.
