I wasn’t invested in the story and I didn’t like the characters.

I found the premise and themes of this book interesting and think it worked well as an audiobook. Some of the characters and their actions felt a bit unbelievable to me.

In particular, I wasn’t  convinced by the reasons given for why the bad guys cared so much about the main character and spent the whole book chasing him.

I found the dog really annoying until about a paragraph before it died. I think that was the point and was a sign of good writing, but not necessarily enjoyable.

I also find it irritating when books censor swearing but include violence, death, injury and prejudice.

I may or may not listen to the next book at some point in the future.

WOW, OKAY. how do I even start? This is more of a rant than an actual review but here we go?
In all honesty, this wasn’t the worst read of my life. If you want to read it, I won’t stop you. The concept was intriguing, but was executed poorly. After the first few chapters it felt super repetitive. I don’t leave a series unfinished, so I will be reading the next 2 books, but what do you even do from now on?
Why do I hate this book? It’s slow-paced, the MC is horribly unlikeable (seriously Todd from the first page you gave me the ick), it had cheap grasps at getting the reader to feel something, finally topped off with simple uninteresting “plot twists” every other chapter (mainly a weird amount of revival of all the nasty characters)
Every single one of those deaths were so cheap AND SO SO POINTLESS! I originally was going to give this a 3.5 but those later chapters? Made me ball my eyes out and that rating slowly went lower and lower the more I read.
Anyway, I hope Todd gets attacked by a crocodile next.

I  really enjoyed the writing and overall themes -- a lot of great and thoughtful concepts, creative writing styles and extremely emotive. I would have given it four stars except for the utterly exhausting and traumatic plot. These kids can't catch a break, almost to the point of me wanting to put the book down completely. I often felt tense out of sheer frustration while reading because it seemed like the author was intentionally flipping the table before the reader had a chance to recover from the last upsetting episode. And while I get that this was probably a purposeful writing device, it made my experience of the book far less enjoyable, not because I was empathizing with the characters, but because I was feeling exasperation towards the author.

While I'd love to keep reading the series to dive deeper into the concepts and characters, I'm not sure I have the energy for all the trauma porn.
