Really enjoyed this memoir. I think there were a couple areas that could have been expanded on - I wanted more detail about his time in Albuquerque such as rebuilding the NM Philharmonic - but maybe that's because I live in Albuquerque.

Decent memoir.
I loved reading about White’s childhood, and find the journey from his childhood (homeless) to where he ended up in his adult life (with a PhD, astute tuba player and teacher) fascinating.
The story itself seemed to drag on at points though, and skipped around so much that I was confused how many years had passed and who characters were.

I picked this one up because it was about a man who plays tuba. What I got was an exceptional story of a man overcoming just about any obstacle you can think of, while paving the way for others to become the rule rather than the exception. Such an amazing life.

I was a little wary of this book at the beginning as I was just reading it for a book group, but this book, especially in audio book format was great. At times it was a little dry with unnecessary information, but overall I really appreciated Richard White's storytelling. It helped that the audio book was narrated by White himself as it brought a lot of energy and personalization to the book. Plus the tuba music between each chapter just kept me so immersed! White's story and passion bleeds through all his writing. For a topic, like Tuba, which I am not super interested in, White made me compelled to keep reading. He talks about poverty, racism, alcoholism, and many other serious topics with unflinching honesty and depth. I would definitely recommend this audiobook!!

Audiobook has music intertwined

Loved this book. Dr. Richard reads the audiobook and the audiobook has tuba playing between chapters and a song after the epilogue but the book version allows me to highlight so I switched between the two. Definitely recommend.
