This is like, if you took a Liz Tomforde book and tossed it in the washing machine. Whatever soggy, tattered mess you pulled out after an extended spin cycle, it would be this book.
That was mean.
This wasn't that bad.
There just wasn't any real DEPTH to anything that happened in this book. It had all the hallmarks. All the banter, all the tropes. It had the troubled backstory and the quirky fun BFF characters. There was a little team-stuff. Hot, hot, hot smut with plenty of dirty talk. The declarations of love all sound good--characters say all the right things.
On the surface. It felt... I dunno man. Just, washed out.
I wanted there to be more of the fake dating trope. It flickered onto the scene and then immediately evaporated into thin air. I wanted more buildup and more tension before they fell into bed together. I wanted more confrontation with the shithole ex. I wanted more angst when the scandal happened.
I wanted stuff to make just a little more sense. For instance: Angie (Eva/Evangelina) keeps saying that she doesn't date athletes. But there's never an athlete ex in the picture to explain WHY she doesn't date them. The A-hole ex was a musician, I think. And it's said she dated a string of the same sorts before Asher. She supposedly has a hang up about athletes because of high school boys that honestly isn't in any way relevant to the story. It wouldn't have been difficult to fix this issue. If the a-hole ex HAD been an athlete, bam. Problem solved. He didn't even have to be a professional like Drake--coulda just peaked in high school. And the connection would have been enough to justify the blurb on the cover. And she doesn't even TRY to resist Drake. The lines blur from fake-dating to real relationship hella fast.
Just, Eh.
This wasn't a struggle to get through. The characters aren't annoying. The plot did an okay job of keeping my interest. The smut made me laugh because it was a liiiiittle over the top but whatever. If you like sports romances and are in need of a quick light read, maybe this'll interest you. If you're not too picky about substance and just wanna have a good time. Just, you know, manage your expectations.
