Three and a half stars. I was so surprised how much I enjoyed this novel. Having a vague idea what “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” was about from the film, I did not expect this to be such a well-written horror novel. Both dated and timeless, the issues the pod people bring up— technology replacing life, for one— are very relevant in 2021. Written in the 1950s, as someone who’s a huge Stephen King fan, this felt very much like a King novel— in all the best ways.

En väldigt snabbt skriven bok. Man måste hänga med och ibland bara låta allt gå rätt snabbt. Stressen och förvirringen som karaktärerna känner allt eftersom historien framskrider känns, liksom på riktigt känns, i hantverket som är boken.
Jag förstår varför det är en klassiker. Mycket bättre än vad jag förväntade mig, sen kanske jag inte helt vet vad jag förväntade mig heller. Jag fastnade ganska snabbt för huvudkaraktären! Man blev nära honom på ett sätt. Det kändes personligt, och det var det ju till viss del också.
Den enda anledningen att den inte får en femma är väl att vissa delar inte överlevt tiden så bra efter 70 år. Kvinnliga karaktärer som mest hänger på någons arm eller måste hantera att deras klackskor, t.ex. Jag vet jag vet, femtiotal, det är vad det var, och inte för att jag blir förvånad eller besviken av kvinnorna var så (som sagt, mycket väl förväntat), utan mer att det tar ut mig ur läsningen och väcker mig.

La storia è interessante: Miles, il protagonista, è un medico in una cittadina piccola e sperduta dell'America.
I suoi problemi cominciano quando torna in città una sua vecchia compagna, Becky, che lo prega di visitare sua cugina. La donna infatti pare fermamente convinta che i suoi genitori non siano più loro. Riconosce che siano identici fisicamente fino in ogni minimo dettaglio, e che ricordino ogin cosa del passato. Ma c'è qualcosa che le ha fatto comprendere la tremenda verità, qualcosa che non sa nemmeno lei come spiegare.
Miles, ovviamente, la bolla come pazza e la spedisce da un amico psichiatra.
Però nei giorni seguenti sempre più persone in città manifestano lo stesso disturbo, e anche lo psichiatra ammette di non avere idea di cosa si tratti. Ma è sicuro non siano problemi psichici, magari una qualche sorta di forma di isteria collettiva. E pare avere visto giusto, dal momento che poco a poco tutti sembrano rinsavire.
Ma a un certo punto Miles viene convocato da Jack, e a casa sua e della moglie lui e Becky trovano un corpo privo di identità.
Privo di identità nel senso che ha un abbozzo di lineamenti senza però averli ancora ben marcati, non ha impronte digitali... sembra un'opera ancora in fieri.
I quattro sono giustamente presi dal panico, e da qui comincerà la storia vera e propria, con la loro lenta scoperta della verità riguardo a questo misterioso corpo e riguardo alle segnalazioni ricevute precedentemente dai pazienti riguardo a parenti che non erano chi sembravano essere.
L'atmosfera si fa squisitamente claustrofobica, la speranza si fa sempre più esile, la paranoia sempre maggiore.
L'unica pecca è una certa ingenuità di fondo nel protagonista -comprensibile per la mentalità dell'epoca, comunque, e molto umana-, e almeno a me ha fatto un certo effetto ritrovarmi in una mentalità degli anni cinquanta, con il dottore della cittadina che è visto quasi come una personalità e uno scienziato, e lui stesso che si atteggia abbastanza; e poi Miles e Becky reduci da un divorzio e provati in maniera assurda dalla cosa, sopratutto Becky; la sua cugina che essendo ancora single a trenta anni è ormai una zitella senza speranza.
Ma a parte questo fattore età, mi risulta difficile trovare lati negativi a questa storia: la storia, l'atmosfera, la coerenza, il finale... tutto diretto davvero bene.

Loved it. Very easy read. Very timely, in that it was set in a much earlier period (30's?) but seemed like it was today, as well.

A classic horror sci-fi page turner for sure, but it did lose its steam at the half-way point. I was actually scared and creeped out at first. However, as the scale of the threat got bigget and bigger, I was only thinking about how they are going to beat them. The story benefited a lot more when it was quiet and subdued. I guess that's the nature of how stories like this one has to eventually develop into. It often seems like the next logical step is just to have more of the same scary thing but more, but that doesn't really work. The message of the story was also spelled out too blatantly, which I assumed is the "product of the times" or whatever. Still, it's an overall a fun read. It's like a good horror movie, creative premise and entertaining.

I am a big fan of the movie adaptations of Jack Finney's Invasion of the Body Snatchers but only mildly enjoyed the book. The ending of the book was reminiscent of War of the Worlds' ending and was a tad dull and nowhere near as exciting as the famous final scene with Donald Sutherland in the '78 film. For the first half of the novel I was hooked but I felt it dragged during the middle and close of the story. I think Finney took some of the interest out of the body snatchers by over explaining and the latter half of the book was far less creepy or interesting than it could of been. Despite this, the underlying plot is great and that is why adaptations of Finney's story has thrived.
