Liked this better than the first in this series! Still think I'd like it better if it was set in a place that really existed - although this one felt more real than the first. Clever plot and excellent writing as always.

Loved the Logan MacRae series and I also enjoyed the first Ash Henderson book however I only found this one ok. It was full of a lot of unnecessary violence and was too far fetched. I would like to think that people working on this kind of task force would not behave like this! I think it was trying too hard to have black humour which is Stuart's style, but this one did not quite hit the mark for me.

This book reminded me of why I started reading mystery thrillers in the first place.

3.5 stars. Dark and gritty.

I found this a bit of a slog for some reason. It didn't grab me until two thirds of the way through and then it picked up a bit. The writing style got in the way of the story. Songs on the radio would be one line, events or actions on another line, back to the song or any other background noise and back to the present. I started skipping every other passage when this style was used and it made for a better read. The problem was there was just to much of it to enjoy. There was no clear path with the story. It took me several tries to just get going with the book in the first place and then it was like running through mud.

I've enjoyed the Logan McRae series of books but this is different and it's hard to really put a finger on why.
adventurous challenging dark mysterious tense medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Complicated
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

I kept on with this because I don't like to give up on books. It is however gratuitously and unpleasantly violent to a ridiculous degree; its contains characters that simply are not believable; its tries to ratchet up suspense by dropping us into a story many years after the events began and never really explaining what was happening back then.
