This is only the second of Stuart MacBride's books I've read and I can confidently say I have found a new favourite author.
Eight years ago, ‘The Inside Man’ murdered four women and left three more in critical condition—all of them with their stomachs slit open and a plastic doll stitched inside.
And then the killings stopped.
But he's back.
Ash Henderson investigated the original case, now he's been called upon to work with his ex-colleagues in the police to find The Inside Man. Ash himself is a man broken, physically and mentally but also one with a drive for attaining justice, no matter what it takes.
I love the darkness, the edge, the pace. At one point I was reading it in the wee hours, and in the book dogs were barking and people were shouting and I found myself worrying that I was going to wake the house with all the noise....until I remembered it was a book and not a film so the sounds were only in my head, not actually audible to anyone else.
I think that says it all really.
I can't wait to read another book featuring these characters that I feel I know so well just two books in.

Voor mij 4,5 ster. Hele goede thriller; meerdere verhaallijnen die allemaal daadwerkelijk (en geloofwaardig) afgesloten worden. Interessante personages en goed plot. Het enige minpunt: van ongeveer pagina 340 tot 380 begon het mij iets te lang te duren.
I've been a fan of Stuart Macbride's for a long time although somehow I missed the firs book in this series. This is a follow up to a previous novel featuring Ash Henderson who was investigating a serial murder, lost his own daughter to that murderer and was framed for a crime he didn't commit by Mrs. Kerrigan, a local gangster, has her thugs beat him up so often that he can't get out of prison because he is considered a risk. However, suddenly he is sprung by an up and coming police officer who is putting together a special squad. They still haven't found Inside Man who killed several women in a particularly horrific manner. He gets out, but plans revenge. I have to say that I found this to be particularly bloody and long winded. I found myself skipping large parts at the end which seemed unnecessary. Is Mr. Macbride being paid by the word? I hope he returns to his familiar characters soon, and that he tames his blood thirsty instincts. There's a saying that "less is more." He should heed it.
I quite enjoyed the story though it lacks the humour of the Logan McRae series and is a much darker, much more violent book.

This is the second book in the series and this time around, Ash Henderson is out of prison in order to assist Police Scotland with a new case - one that bears unpleasant similarities to a serial killer case from eight years previously.
Ash is both intrigued by the case but also anxious that he takes every opportunity to take revenge on the infamous Mrs. Kerrigan, who framed him for murder and has been responsible for his regular beatings while in jail.
At times it is difficult to support Ash as it truly becomes an anti-hero in this book, especially when compared to the

I like is book because of it's dark humour, awesome detail at were in to the character the writer show the dark side of the world at we don't get to see. is book has it all dark humour, serial killer, a crazy gang boss and I do not see the ending coming.
Ash Henderson is a awesome anti hero and dose what he do want and he remind me of puisher because both of them have lost then family and he doesn't care about the law and dose what it tack to keep his love one save.

I have read a number of Stuart MacBride's books including the Logan McRae series and the first in this Ash Henderson series and have generally enjoyed his crime fiction. I don't know if it was the mood I was in but I found this one very long and drawn out - it does weigh in at over 500 pages! I also really struggled with the level of hate - every page seemed to have people physically, mentally or verbally abusing others. It felt like the police, the psychologists, even the victims family were on a par with the serial killer in the abusive and violent stakes! It was just too much for me. And as for the character of Alice - arrghh - why has she turned into a sniveling hopeless female who has to cling on to Henderson?
