This is a challenging book, both in the sense of Demon's stream-of-consciousness voice and the trials he endures. But after 50 pages, one's brain adapts to Kingsolver's writing style. The audiobook narrator helped in developing a stride. Demon goes through so much, and there's a balance of both good and bad influences in the side characters. I also appreciated Kingsolver's strong stance on the war wreaked upon Appalachians by land grabbers, mining companies, and Big Pharma.

Enjoyable listen. Slow pace but never found myself bored. Interesting story and great character development of the main character.

This book is brilliant and brilliantly written. In a micro sense, it's a first-person look at addiction. You root for Demon the whole way through and understand every step of the way how and why things play out for him as they do. It's a stigma-breaking, stigma-examining book. In a macro sense, it's a look at the opioid crisis and how it has played out in certain communities across the country in the US.

This is an amazing, amazing book. It grips you from the very first chapter and keeps you hooked to the very end. Every character is complex and intriguing,  the setting being a character in and of itself. A realistic and heartfelt look at the struggles of poverty, addiction, and the opioid epidemic in Appalachia, while maintaining resilience as a continued theme. Many miss the mark by overlooking or misstating all the good of rural upbringing in telling stories like these, but Kingsolver does not. A must read.
