I went into this not knowing much really, just that I'd enjoyed Viola Davis in HTGAWM and a few other smaller roles.
What a strong woman. Being in Australia, I can say that we are lucky in that whilst there is poverty, I don't think we have the breadth of poverty of some places in America. So this was eye-opening.
I flicked between audio book and e-book, but enjoyed Viola's voice more on the audio.
Viola brought us, the reader, right alongside her. Scenes such as the one where she p%ssed her pants sitting in the classroom, or when she was chased by her peers, gave us a glimpse of just how strong that little girl actually was.
She deserves all of the success and happiness she has fought for.

DNF’d half way through
I love that Viola Davis narrated it and it’s amazing to see how she navigated such intense struggles, but the story felt slow. Feels weird to criticize someone’s life story, but especially compared to Matthew Perry’s this one didn’t grab me.

WHAT A POWERFUL STORY ABOUT HOW VIOLA CAME UP FROM POVERTY TO ACHIEVE AMAZING THINGS IN ACTING AND STORYTELLING. SHE IS ONE OF MY FAVORITES AND HER STORY IS INCREDIBLE, HOW MUCH SHE LEARNED AND STILL HAS TO WORK THROUGH IS MINDBLOWING, YOU SEE HOW SHE PULLS FROM WITHIN TO BE AN ACTOR AND I WOULD SAY, AN ICON.
