I had really high hopes for this one but sadly it was a huge disappointment. While I understand that the subjects of what the children went through is obviously a very sensible one, what is the point of having such mystery about it and not talking about any of the events? It just makes the book feels like it drags for nothing and that ultimately we are reading about events that might not be worth telling (when we know there are others just under the surface) which is just frustrating. Also the constant jump in time/flashback style can make for great storytelling but it just gets annoying when the timeline changes at every single paragraph, especially when in my case it took me two chapters to realize the narrator was supposed to be the same. I’m a big fan of true crime but I wouldn’t recommend this book to anyone

I really appreciated that the horror was muted, as if still seen from a child's perspective, with wishful thinking and hope. I also enjoyed the deep character dive and all the different perspectives. If you are looking for a gripping psychological read that allows the horror to gently sweep in, you're in for ta treat.
