tragic, poignant, thoughtful, and beautifully written. i cant’t even fully articulate the way this book made me feel. full of sympathy for the it’s characters, mourning for their lost potential, critique of the prison system and the way which we view and consume crime.

This is a book about men hurting women (starting with Johnny hurting Lavender), the shortcomings of the child welfare system, and the failures of the justice system. It's also about the mind of a sociopath who cannot feel empathy but really wants to (and that's maybe the saddest part?).
I think my high expectations set me up for failure here because much of the plot fell flat to me, especially Saffy and Hazel's half-hearted, stiff critiques of social injustice... I also felt weird about the white author making the two cops WOC??

Lit rally tore thru this book it was so good and also very sadddd. The ansel chapters being in 1st person and other characters being in 3rd person was so smart. Like we’re up for execution and watching the Girls lives play out.
