If I’m honest, I don’t think I currently appreciate this book as much as I should, or as much as I will in the future. But my thoughts after finishing this (9 months after starting it)? It was hard to get through.

Obviously from a literary perspective it’s an incredible play, and some would argue ‘ahead of its time’. Personally, I think ‘ahead of its time’ becomes less relevant when it still perpetuates racist and misogynistic stereotypes. It’s difficult to separate Shakespeare’s not-particularly-modern views from the content of this play.

Kind of scared for the essays I’ll have to write on this because I do not understand it (:

I preferred Macbeth

shakespeare did not write othello to be a hero….he wrote a black man who was the exception to the stereotype and became civilized! all so much fun right!? he is compared to an animal a number of times and eventually ‘returns to his roots’ and unleashes the horrid black animal inside him. this is unbelievably racist and i cant imagine how this is so many peoples favorite shakespeare play. on top of that the characters were not fully developed or relatable and the only redeemable quality was emilia
