The different character POVs drove the story along in an interesting way, adding depth and complexity to the narrative.
I do wish there was more world building, but as the ending suggests, we’ll see more of that in the next book.
I appreciate the mix of platonic and love relationships. It gave the story more life and made the characters more real. It didn’t feel explicitly romance driven.

Action packed, fast paced, love triangle, high fantasy, loveable characters, witches... what more could you want?!
Picking up straight from book one this book throws you straight into the story. The love triangle continues without being to cliche or cringy. As the story develops you see sides to characters you hadn't been privvy to in book one. I really enjoy the slow introduction of the mystical/high fantasy elements. Everything is allowed to build so you never feel like you're being rushed into a story without all the information.
Celaena is a character that is slightly too good at everything which makes you want to hate her but somehow SJM stops that happening and instead you love her and want to be her. I also want to get my hands on her wardrobe. The growth and continuation of the relationship between her and Nehemia is a beautiful friendship. Something you strive to have with your own friends.

I loved this book. I don’t quite feel I can award it the full 5 stars but I feel as though we’re right on the precipice of the series becoming so, so epic. I can’t wait to read Heir of Fire to see what happens next in Celaena’s adventure now that she has left Adarlan for Wendlyn and where we may see further use of her Fae powers.
I’m pleased that Celaena is such a strong, badass female. Though this book was pretty bloodthirsty, and at times just given the nature of her being an assassin can make the reader contemplative of how much we feel able to empathise with her character.
The relationships built between characters are complex and well explored, giving them good depth and aided by the author’s use of writing different paragraphs from their different perspectives within the same scene.
The book had a decent plot with mysteries and character development that made me want to keep reading. It gave me heavy Game of Thrones vibes.
I thoroughly loved the ending. I am super excited now that the plot seems to be taking a fresh direction but I’m also looking forward to reading the prequel, The Assassin’s Blade and getting to learn more of her origin story.
Satisfactory ending? Yes.
Jan 2023 re-read - 4.25⭐️
I have actually increased my rating of this book by a quarter of a star after my re-read. Having read the whole series, I actually found that it made this book more exciting for me. There were lots of twists and turns which whilst I remembered vaguely, I didn’t remember them in much detail, so it was exciting to read it again. Still adore the character development in this and the ending was fab of course!
