I normally shy away from books written by "stars" because I feel many of them are ghost-written, are just flat-out poorly written and/or written for attention and hype. When I started hearing good things about Dear Mr. You I decided to go ahead and give it a try. As an actress, I really like Mary-Louise Parker, and I was hooked on her show Weeds, especially the first few seasons. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by the book. As with all collections, there were a few pieces I didn't "connect" with but as a whole the book is good. I really enjoyed her last letter entitled "Dear Oyster Picker." If GR allowed it, I'd actually give the book 3.75 stars.
I tried to stick with it, but just couldn’t. The writing is good, but I got bored with the letters. There’s nothing connecting them and a lot of them are confusing (who is she talking about? How does this person connect in her story?). Just too boring for my taste.

Kind of an odd book. I got annoyed by some of the essays that tried to be more than they really were. I'm not usually interested in celebrity memoirs, but I read this one because I like Mary-Louise Parker.
effortlessly funny, sexy, and charming, just like Nancy Botwin, herself. while i wish it was slightly more informative about the author, the experimental nature of this memoir can’t be overlooked. well done
A number of entertainers (mostly comedians) have written books in the past few years that really weren't very good - mostly because the entertainers were not interesting writers. Mary-Louise Parker, on the other hand, has a unique writing style that I personally found captivating. The letter format was less distracting and awkward than I had anticipated, and the exclusive focus on men in her life was actually a nice change of pace for me. I also liked that she didn't name names in the letters, which keeps it from feeling like a tell-all screed. It's worth mentioning that I am a fan of Parker, and even watched Weeds until the bitter end, so I'm an ideal audience for the book, but I think would have enjoyed the book even if I weren't a fan.
Wow, this was impressive. Definitely not the typical "celebrity memoir" some might expect - this is fantastic, artful writing. I wasn't sure what to expect, was not entirely sure I would be a fan of a memoir of a woman, written as a series of letters to the various men who have impacted her life...? Seemed...not feminist, or something?? However, I was surprised to find that the format really worked well, the writing was lovely, and the substance of these "letters" was incredibly engaging. Some sections were poignant, some very funny. Each letter was thoughtful and beautifully constructed, and I thoroughly enjoyed the entire book. I really enjoyed listening to it on audio - read by the author. Highly recommend this one.
Wasn't enjoying to the point that I set it down and never returned.
I love MLP’s voice, so this was a no brainer. It was actually really interesting and thought provoking. But dang, she had a lot of sex and bad relationships, lol.
I adored the chapter about adopting her daughter (Dear Uncle?), Dear Movement Teacher, and especially Dear Oyster Picker.
