Interesting idea but damn, the overall writing is bordering on offensive to the readers for how awful some parts were

I really love Elly Griffith's recent Harbinder Kaur series and I enjoyed her writing in this book too. Certain aspects felt a bit dated, including some fat phobia and stereotypes (with internalized fat phobia in the MC). There is also essentially no racial diversity, unfortunately. I was able to look past this as a product of being published 13 years ago, and overall liked this book, skimming certain paragraphs here and there due to triggers. I will probably pick up the next in series, since I liked the characters and understand they will continue to develop throughout this long series.

Content warnings: harm to children (including death), pet death, fat phobic stereotypes (including internalized fat phobia).
