This book was a surprise. At first, I almost didn't read it - there was something about the beginning, the pacing, that put me off. However, I quickly became interested in the main characters and their story. I look forward to more by this author.

Wow! I can’t believe I have only just discovered Dr Ruth Galloway! I devoured this book in two days and am now ready to dive into its sequel, The Janus Stone.

This book combines so many elements I love including archeology, mythology and criminology…and the merest hint of a budding relationship. Dr Ruth Galloway is a wonderful protagonist. She is intelligent, witty, resourceful, caring and self-sufficient. She is always willing to do what’s right even if it’s not an easy path to tread (implicating those closest to her along the way).

In addition to wonderful characterisation, this book is incredibly atmospheric. Being set amongst the salt marshes of North Norfolk gives it an almost eerie, gothic feel.

I am so glad this is an established, and I believe completed, series as I have loads more stories to savour and I can’t wait to read each and every one of them.

Dr. Ruth Galloway, a forensic archaeologist, is asked by the police to identify some bones uncovered in the marsh near her home. They turn out to be those of an Iron Age girl but the police nevertheless consult her on ritual elments that seem to be part of a present-day crime.

I enjoyed this very atmospheric story with a very exciting climax that I had to put down several times just to remember to breathe.

I absolutely love this series so much, I'm now listening to it on audio. The first book introduces Ruth, our protagonist, and the main side characters. We learn Ruth lives on the salt marsh, and a body is found. There are also two missing children, and Ruth works with Detective Harry Nelson to solve the mysteries. This book is great because you get to figure out who the 'bad guy's is. Highly recommend!

3.5 -- Fun and engaging read but a little predictable. Characters feell sparse in their development. I did suspect various people at different points and was satisfied that it ended with a touch more of a twist than I had expected.
