Starts slow, and has all the traits of the traditional boooring "80s-style female detective" novels where women are all sitcom wives that moonlight detectives because men let them. - And then, it becomes a deconstruction with moments of literary brillance. Love it!
A tough read, but an extremely rewarding one, as far as I'm concerned. Went to this expecting nothing, and will now continue directly with the sequel.

A solid mystery, with interesting characters and amateur detective/professional archaeologist. Though I’m getting tired of the dead and/or missing girl story line. The Crossing Places by Elly Griffiths. 🌟🌟🌟
Too implausible for my liking.
It irks me when the detective is handing out original letters, that are possible written by a murderer to someone he has just met.

I just really liked Ruth Galloway. She was a great character. And I enjoyed the archaeology in the book — more than the mystery. It was a fun read and I look forward to the next one in the series.

This author was recommended to me by a member of our book group. I really liked the whole forensic archaeology angle and the atmospheric descriptions of the bleak salt marshes. I understand why the character of Ruth Galloway is a bit marmite, but I quite liked her humanity and complexity. I was less convinced by her relationship with Nelson. I would be interested to see how this series develops but am not completely hooked...
