emotional mysterious medium-paced

Book 1 of the Ruth Galloway series. I wasn’t necessarily the biggest fan of Ruth. As a main character, she was just okay. Her actions were disappointing. But, the actual mystery and the setting were very good.

Ruth is a professor of archaeology. She lives on the salt marshes in a small cottage with her two cats. She is asked to work with the police when a young girl goes missing, and human bones are found out in the marsh.

It wasn’t hard to figure out the culprit, but there was enough chaos going on in the plot to make it a good, fast, interesting read.

I liked all the Iron Age stuff; didn’t love how everything came back to the same handful of people, but that’s a genre staple.

I added this to my TBR a while back looking for dark academia books and I'm glad I did! It was rather obvious who the culprit was early in the book, but I still enjoyed the moody and atmospheric setting. I'm not in a rush to read the next book in the series, but I'll probably dip into it again when I'm in the mood for a darker mystery

dark lighthearted relaxing

No stars for this one as I stopped at page 19. It could have been good, very atmospheric and chilling, but unfortunately nearly every page mentions how fat the
protagonist is. I stopped at the point where she “boils the water for some nice, fattening pasta”. No thanks.
