Adara is a winter child. She was born in winter and came out blue as ice. Her mother died giving birth to her and her father, even though he loves her, resents the fact that she took his beloved away. She is not like the other children. She doesn't laugh or cry even when she is hurt. She is a cold child.
Adara loves the winter and looks forward to the cold each year. Each winter she builds an ice castle for the ice lizards who live in the ice and snow. She is able to handle them because her hands are not warm like the other children. She also loves the winter because that is when the ice dragon comes. Every winter she rides the ice dragon even though he instills fear in the hearts of everyone else.
There is a war going on in the land and that war is getting closer to the farm. Adara's uncle Hal, a dragonrider in the king's army, warns the family to flee south to escape the enemy, but they do not listen. Then the war comes to them and it is up to Adara and the ice dragon to save them all.
I started out really enjoying this story. I loved the idea of a winter child with an ice dragon companion. I even liked the fact that the ice dragon was able to save everyone even during the summer when it was warm. What I didn't really like was the ending of the book. I thought it was too abrupt and Adara's change isn't really explained or explored. I think it could have been better.

A sweet, quick read with heroism and adventure. Featuring a female lead, and perfect for the girls who do not envision themselves as princesses and ladies, but dragon riders and wildlings. I wish I had read this one as a child, instead of whatever Little House on the Prairie and chaotic teen-girl drama thrown my way. Bookmarking this one to reread with my own children.
I liked this book, it was a cutesy story for children in the world of ice and fire, and the best thing is that it actually is interesting for adults too. I think because of this story, there are a lot of theories for the "A Song of Ice and Fire" book series.
