This was probably my second biggest disappointment of January, not because it was terrible or bad, but because it has all my favorite tropes (rivals to lovers, sharing one bed, forced proximity) and it didn’t work. Oh, how frustrated I am that it didn’t work for me. And I'm not sure why.
The characters felt flat and the writing was okay, the dialogue wasn’t great or funny but not bad… Maybe it was the miscommunication? That they got together pretty quick and I was waiting for the big fight and it felt pretty dumb? That they sort of made up but never really talked about their problems? Yeah, I don’t know. My heart is too broken after this one.

I was super excited for this but I figured out early on it would not be it for me. While I know this is advertised as a “road trip” romance that’s not we got. I wouldn’t have minded if the story provided more depth and evolution (characters included). The conflicts had no stakes and to me the writing read very early 2000s even with the modern references. The fact that it is less than 300 pages but still took me 4 days to read says a lot. It very much read like a debut but hopefully her books will improve in the future.
