This book is a very quick read that allowed me to "shut off" my brain after a heavier read. Love the setting and the character that "country girl in the city" even with magic involved or not involved for Katie Chandler a magical immune. Loved the light hearted quirky humor of the book.
There were so many things I thought were super cute about this book and done well. I particularly liked the fresh take on the heroine not being magical. The frog resolution was a bit hokey but the one thing that drove me absolutely bonkers was the worse than real life amount of will they, won't they. I'll probably read more, it was a fun read, and it was a different kind of mystery, for a change.

Audio-book version:
Falls into the whimsical fantasy category that one shouldn't think too long & hard about; it was good story while I was working on other chores -- easy to listen to, safe to listen around my children when I played it on Alexa.
Katie, immune to magic, intertwines herself with magical community because she can see things they cannot. She crushes on a wizard & saves the day. Her romance journey apparently will continue as the series goes on...I may or may not continue the series -- my 8 year old daughter who listened while we cleaned, feels that we should!

I wasn’t going to write a review for this book and I won’t say much now. I started this novel ages ago but at some point I dropped it. After I decided that it had been on my currently-reading shelf for way too long, I decided to go forth and finish it. I struggled through the last half and I realised why I had dropped in the last half. It’s a fantasy novel, I get it but for the most part it just bored me. I didn’t like the main character all that much and she came off sort of lame, unrealistic perfection [and maybe that’s just me] but that’s how I saw her. As for the other characters, there was not enough depth as I would have hoped for. All in all, a letdown in combining the modern day with magic.
At first I thought it was going to be a book about a girl discovering she is a witch in modern day New York City. It was not what I expected when she is actually the most non-magical person. It's a new and different concept, which is a relief. As much as I love a good fantasy book and the Harry Potter series, it would be a shame to have another witch book. The main character is in her 20s with a crappy job in NYC (wasn't sure if this was my autobiography at first) and she is offered a major upgrade in employment (whenever the magical world is ready to embrace me with a job, I'm ready). Unfortunately once you get past all the introductions and descriptions, the actually bad guy, the lawyer, the battle = LAME. Overall it was an easy read and maybe I would read the 2nd book (I read reviews that it was better).
I've been burned out by life lately, so I was looking for some quick, laugh-out-loud amusement. Hellooo Katie Chandler! The storyline is cute and inventive - nothing horribly trite - and the characters are lovable. Katie's world was a great place to hide for a bit.
I first read this book when I was a teenager, but for 15 years it haunted me. It was my first Urban RomFan and I had read it so much back then that this first re-read after so many years was just like remember a song you knew all the lyrics from. Owen was my absolute first bookboyfriend and no other has taken his spot in my heart.
It was one of the two book that got me into fantasy and are at the origin of my bookaddiction. So happy I'm re-reading this, and this time I will finish the series, finally.
Now, I would give this book a 3* and will rate the rest of the series with my current experience, but for this one, for now, just because it made all warm inside again, it's a 5.
