Wow! Really enjoyed this, and burned through it fast than expected. A fast paced adventure following an odd/couple brought together by fate, Dinniman has done a good job of including these scenes of tenderness and humanity without feeling like a genre jump from the violence and grit.
Surprisingly, I also found parts of this quite inspiring and moving. Like under the dust jacket, You Will Not Break Me is quite the motto to live by, but I think is also very apt for those of us who feel aligned with Carl. Of course, things were bad before, but in recent months it does feel like the carpet has been yanked out from under us, and we are being forced to go through increasingly mindless gauntlets just to preserve ourselves. If this sounds close to home, I would urge you to take Carl’s advice to heart: don’t think about Level 9, just prepare yourself for the next level.

BOOKSELLER NOTES: fun, fast-paced but with enough heartfelt moments to keep you from getting desensitized. Comp media would be if the Capitol in Hunger Games did an arena that was Intergalactic D&D. Lots of video game and ttrpg references, but in enough context I think anyone who has someone under 35 in their life would be able to follow.

I love this book. I love the snippets of mystery that keep you trying to figure out the system at the same time Carl is trying to understand the system. Some of rhe scenes made me cry. And I felt bad for some of the creatures. Which is another thing I really liked about it. It gave humanity to what was supposed to be the "enemy". Im excited to keep reading and see what develops and learn all the secrets that are happening behind the scenes.

Very amusing. Love the audio work too with the video game voices and such. Slower moving than I expected but I like them.

So funny, so gory! The perfect book for gamers. I really enjoyed reading this book however I wasn't aware that it was the first of a long series. The DnD statistical gameplay elements can be a bit tedious but it's fun if you're clued into RPG games.

No character's stories are concluded by the end of this volume. So I was left unsatisfied. I was anticipating a final boss battle or a tragic defeat. Now I expect I'd only get that after 6 more volumes. Instead the story abruptly cuts off after 2 chapters about taming a pet.

I enjoyed this book, and gave it to my husband to read. Its been a while since I've laghed out loud at something other than a Discworld novel.

Though Carl isnt as clever by half. Dungeon Crawler Carl is also darker than I thought it would be and I came to dread the boss fights.

I also agree with other reviews that it is a bro focused book with undertones of misogyny.
