This definitely falls under the LitRPG genre in that if you've ever played any form of TTRPG or MMORPG, you already have the basics of what happens. The difference is, it's all written out for you and the main character doesn't take BS from anyone and has a talking cat. I liked it because I knew what to expect and yet was still pleasantly surprised by the creatures and people he meets. The main character's attitude is sometimes a bit too angry for me, but the world has ended, he can't wear shoes and has no pants. I'd be angry too. This is a fun read for those who want an action-packed movie in book form.

4.5 I loved this. It was easy and creative. The characters had depth to them while also not being the most serious life ending sci fi book in the world. Would highly recommend the audio book/kindle combo. I’m excited to continue this series.

a hilarious commentary on the world, filled with dark humor, hilarious anecdotes, and a darker reflection of the world that we live in. But be aware, this is a book loaded with twisted experiences, your definitely going to want to check those trigger warnings before you read this one! i laughed a lot, and i was shocked even more. the gore highlights the humor, and the humor highlights the dark truth of humans pushed to the edge. what would humanity do if it was pushed into a deadly game? i think we all know what would really happen. with morbid humor, foot fetish jokes, and a huge cast of some really messed up people this was a book i'm really surprised i loved so much. dark isn't usually my thing, but the humor in this really helped offset the twisted bits. the cast is also amazing. Carl is a jerk, but he's a charming one, and i LOVE Princess Donut. she's my favorite by far. that's not even counting all the side characters, each with their own goals, each with their own secrets. and things are definitly going to get intense when the world has ended and the survivors are thrust into a deadly dungeon intending on a total party kill.

lizmck's review against another edition

DID NOT FINISH: 30%

DNF. I assume Carl will make it past the first level, but I won't.

The death of the neighborhood boss was horrifying. Carl realized that she was another trapped human... and killed her anyway? And not a quick, merciful death, but an awful, gory, bloody, painful death. On top of that, at the point where I stopped, the only women characters have been bitchy and/or naked and/or dead.

Thanks to the publisher and to NetGalley for making this available to read, but no thanks.
