Three stars might be too generous, but I enjoyed all the pictures that were included, so that has to count for something.

I picked this up because director Damien Chazelle talked about it a lot during press for Babylon. I can see how he used it for inspiration but I didn’t love how rag mag it felt.

I had heard about this book when reading another book, and it was described as a lurid true account of hollywood’s Stars and starlets. Which is exactly what it turned out to be. It reads like an old fashioned tabloid except that it has more sympathy towards the people it writes about (or some of them at least). It’s fascinating, juicy, descriptive and sometimes gruesome (it includes pictures - heads up there’s one of the car crash that killed Jayne Mansfield and then a page later a close up of her dead dog laying outside the car. Oof.) I highly enjoyed this, it was fascinating learning about the lows of Hollywood stars and starlets.

Take this book with a shaker full of salt. It's a pretty stunning parallel to the Golden Age of Hollywood, in that it's got tons of glamorous and interesting photos and mostly-to-half truths masking sometimes complete and utter bull crap.

That said, it's a very nice collection of folklore and legend.

I wouldn't cite it as a source for anything though. ;)

It was such a fast read with all the graphic ass pictures in it. I am gonna have to do a whole separate deep dive on what in that book was actually true but an entertaining read anyway
