This book should ONLY be read in conjunction with the pod cast series "You Must Remember This" which diligently fact checks Anger's myriad falsehoods and fabrications.

Interesting and fun-though most of these stories have been discovered to be false so take this with a grain of salt! I mistakenly thought before reading Hollywood Babylon would focus on the 50-early 70s in Hollywood. I personally don’t know much about the stars from the 20-50s so I think the gossip wasn’t as interesting to me as it could’ve been. If you like reading about Hollywood and celebrities you should definitely pick this up!

I decided to read Hollywood Babylon solely because of the latest season of You Must Remember This. I had pretty much sworn not to read it years ago but here we are. I read it on and off for about a month, taking in a few chapters at a time every few nights. It's certainly reads like an old gossipy tabloid - I used to read my grandmother's issues of Star growing up and I can see the inspiration.

A hesitant three stars, this kind of feels gross and exploitative at times. But I think because I'm so familiar with Anger as a filmmaker, I can take the bitchiness of his tone as self conscious and ironic. It's very readable and I didn't take any of it as complete gospel, so it kept me entertained enough in between more mammoth Murakami sessions.

I'm not sure I would have read this on my own if I wasn't reading along with the latest season of You Must Remember This. Fact-checking this for the last few months has been interesting, but in general Kenneth Anger's style isn't for me.
