This was a very sweet, charming little read.
It is very much of its period - there are terms included that today would be deemed offensive (see the content warnings) - but I enjoyed it for what it was, and I'm sure that when it was published many girls of narrator Judy's age would have identified with her.
Judy herself - as she would prefer to be called - is a witty, funny narrator with some surprisingly deep thoughts. This is a very easy read, despite some archaic language.
Daddy-Long-Legs isn't earth-shattering, but for what it was, it did it very well.

This is a hot take because so many people love this book! I enjoyed this book overall, but I wish that it was written in a different style. The beginning of the novel is a third-person narration, following Judy at the orphanage and being allowed to go to college by a secret benefactor, she has to write to him every week and she will only ever receive responses from his secretary. The rest of the novel is epistolary, which works until the very end.
I am going to do my best to not spoil this part, but I wish that the revelation of Daddy-Long-Legs was changed back to third-person, I wish we got to see Judy realize who her benefactor is through this narration rather than in letters to him. I was a little disappointed, but it was an enjoyable read.

”هذه الشخصية التي أنوي تنميتها. سأتظاهر بأن الحياة كلها ليست سوى لعبة علي أن ألعبها بمهارة وإنصاف قدر استطاعتي. وإن خسرت فسأرفع كتفيّ وأضحك، وسأفعل ذلك إن ربحت أيضًا.“
أحب الكلاسيكيات من هذا النوع، أحب أبطالها، دائمًا ما يمتلكون خيالًا واسعًا، ونظرة مختلفة للأمور، أكثر جمالًا وحكمة وطرافة — إن كان بالامكان جمع هذه الصفات في شخص واحد — ودائمًا ما أجد أجزاءً من نفسي فيهم (أو فيهن، غالبًا)، كثيرًا من اجزائي المحببة إلي، وحتى بعض الأجزاء التي أحاول غض البصر عنها، أو أعاني من فهمها.
في هذه القصة قد لا تجد الكثير من الأحداث، هذه مجرد قصة شابة تكتشف نفسها والعالم، قد لا تمتلك حبكة قوية، لكنها غنية بالأجواء الدافئة والماتعة. هذه حكاية فهم النفس، وفهم الحياة. أُحب كيف يمكن رؤية تطور شخصية جودي آبوت وخروجها من القالب الذي حاول الميتم إدخالها فيه، ومن ثُمَّ تراها تبدأ بتشكيل نفسها بنفسها، ببطء، لكن بكل حب وتفهم. (أما جزء الحب من القصة، فأفضِّل تجاهله لسلامتي النفسية).
تقول آبوت: ”لقد اكتشفت السر الحقيقي للسعادة، وهو ألّا تتحسر على الماضي على الدوام، أو تفكر بالمستقبل، بل أن تحصل على أكبر قدر من هذه اللحظة. معظم الناس لا يحيون، بل يكتفون بالجري، ويحاولون بلوغ هدف ما بعيد في الأفق، وفي حرارة الجري تنقطع أنفاسهم فيخسرون رؤية الريف الجميل الهادئ الذي يجتازونه. لذا، لقد قررت الجلوس على جانب الطريق وتكديس الكثير من السعادات الصغيرة.“ أليس ذلك عذبًا وبهيًّا؟ البطء والهدوء في عيش الحياة هو من أحد المبادئ التي أقدسها وأجد في القراءة عنها متعةً متجددةً لا تنقطع!

Sweet and funny. Another orphan book, but Jerusha (Judy) has a lot more spunk than Anne of Avonlea.
