4.5 stars. Yeah I’m a woman in stem (I read this book about women in stem).

Thank you to Holiday House and NetGalley for providing me with this eARC in exchange for an honest review!

I absolutely adored this book! I was never much of a math nerd and I know nothing about robotics, but I was genuinely interested in the robotics happen in the book! But of course, the main show was Bel and Teo and their sweet romance story. Bel was an MC I didn't know I was looking for, because she is the perfect amount of fun, smarts, meme-ing, and lovability! Teo, on the other hand, was a beautifully written boy, being someone who does carry some privilege (as far as being a boy in STEM and having A LOT of money) but was very self-aware of this. He was competitive and elitist, yes, but he was also thoughtful, reflective, and considerate! They were a really fun match, and I found myself really compelled by their third act conflict. It's very rare for me to say in a YA Romance that I would have forgiven and gotten back together if I was in their situation, but I can confidently say that for this book! By the time I finished reading, I knew I was going to be placing a preorder so I can own this wonderful book! I cannot recommend highly enough, and please look out for it when it comes out May 31st!

YA romance. I love the STEM aspect of it, similar to Ali Hazelwood but for YA audience. Just a bit too many tropes for me. But a cute fast read.

did i read it because of the name? maybe
did i absolutely devour it? yes

So My Mechanical Romance promised me an enemies-to-lovers story with some academic STEM tension and I went in expecting sparks and sass. Instead, what I got was... a tiny sizzle followed by a mild warm hug, then it kind of just faded out. The “enemies” part? Blink and you’ll miss it. The “lovers” part? Cute, sure, but it didn’t really linger in my heart the way I hoped it would.

Also — and I say this with all the eye rolls in the world — I hated almost every male character in this book except Dash (i might be bias because i like fun guy and he tak merendahkan perempuan! That’s for sure!) and maaaybe Teo... but only because he’s the male lead and I had no choice! (Okay la, Teo’s okay but he’s  not that significant to me)

Honestly, Dash outshined him in every scene — fun, loud, confident, a walking serotonin boost. (Dash literally like the sec lead in kdramas where you just berdoa he miraculously ended-up with the fl) Meanwhile, Teo... meh. Nerdy, closed-off, a little emotionally constipated, (sorry not sorry Teo,) I get that he had his own pressure and trauma but like — sir, not everything has to be about you.

That lovers part?? Ugh, so annoying. I imagined it to be a cute high school lovers kind of vibe — like awkward smiles, butterflies, sweet tension. But what are they?? Kissing nonstop like... ??? :/ it gave nothing. It didn’t feel sweet or slowburn or even swoony — it just felt forced and made me want to flip the page faster.

That being said, there was a quote that stuck with me:

You don’t have to make the world perfect just so people will love you.

Whew. That line? That one hit. Because yes, Teo — chill. Breathe. Love doesn’t have to be earned through suffering. (Okay that’s too harsh. Don’t be too hard on yourself, Teo — take this one, HAHAH!)

but whatever being said here, just take my review with a pinch of salt only (lah tiber, biasalah first time review mcm ajak gaduh.. eh, yeke.. pape pun, its just my 2cents hihi)
