Il canovaccio narrativo che Eric Ambler ci presenta in Topkapi (anche conosciuto come The Light of Day) è di particolare interesse: la figura di Arthur, protagonista anti-eroe, ladruncolo senza morale, è un efficacissimo capovolgimento della figura della spia senza difetti, sempre pronta all'azione e priva di tentennamenti - non è difficile notare l'estrema distanza di questa spia "improvvisata", gettata nell'azione contro la sua volontà, dal granitico Bond di Fleming, di cui Arthur è quasi una copia in negativo, tutto bassezza morale e fisica dove la spia britannica si distingue per senso del dovere e prestanza. Intorno a questo atipico centro gravitano numerosi altri attori, di stampo più classico ma tratteggiati in modo eccellente e raffinato: dalla bionda femme fatale Miss Lipp al pragmatico Harper, passando per le figure appartenenti al mondo dello spionaggio, possiamo notare come Ambler sappia perfettamente manovrare la sua penna, in modo da presentarci figure perfettamente verosimili, tutt'altro che una sequela di stereotipi - un risultato non così scontato per un libro di letteratura gialla (e quindi vittima dello stigma del giallo come un genere "basso") pubblicato agli inizi degli anni '60.
Forte di un'ambientazione suggestiva, di un cast ineccepibile e di un ritmo narrativo perfettamente oliato, la storia delle vicissitudini di Arthur, spia per caso, si snoda attraverso 240 indimenticabili pagine, la cui attrazione sul lettore è impossibile da mettere a tacere: tutto viaggia in un'atmosfera di meraviglia ed attesa, genialmente costellata di colpi di scena, fino alle pagine finali, dove forse qualcosa si incrina - il finale, affrettato e un po' deludente, non rende giustizia alle bellissime pagine che lo precedono, dove il perfetto controllo della macchina narrativa consente ad Ambler di regalarci un capolavoro del giallo che raggiunge i livelli di Simenon e Fleming.

As much as I enjoy spy stories where the protagonist is constantly one step ahead of things, I'm always a little envious. This is not that kind of spy story. I wouldn't want to spend too much more time with Arthur Abdel Simpson, but I very much enjoyed this.

I'd forgotten quite how much I enjoy this book, a blackly comic heist thriller with a tubby, petty crook anti-hero.
Arthur Abdel Simpson, whose nationality is still in question when the book ends with everyone trying to disown him, is a great narrator. A self-avowed petty criminal with a strange, well hidden, constantly offended dignity and a habit of feeling sorry for himself when things go wrong, which is constantly. Every tight corner Simpson finds himself in is one he has put himself in, every moment of danger and stress is of his own making and the fact that he rarely extricates himself through wit or bravery just means you find him more endearing. He's the little man kicking against the pricks, getting in spitefull little jabs against the figures of authority only to find everything comes back around to bite him on his ample arse in the end.
I think I shall hunt down Dirty Story, another Simpson story, as soon as I can.

Existential pre-to-post WW2 spy novel. I listened to a great reader. This story is pure fantasy, though. Hard to believe there could be so many stupid people waging war from both sides!

Quite funny! I found this in an used book store in Paris and carried it around in my purse snatching time to read it on the Metro and in the Jardin Luxembourg. The main character is quite funny and there is a recurring scene with an angry Cypriot cook and an Austrian that made me laugh and laugh.

The book is so good as the movie. Must try to watch this movie again.
