Informational book (told in story form) about the subnivean zone under the snow that various animals depend on in the winter. A daddy-daughter ski trip quickly becomes an educational experience as they discover nature together.

For: woodland animal fans; readers wanting a quiet book about how nature works in winter.

Possible red flags: surprise; animals eating other animals (though off-page).

Beautifully illustrated and informative book about animal life in winter. A father and child spend a day skiing, observing the animal life around them, as the father describes what animals live below the snow. A very peaceful book. I appreciated the Author's Note and additional resources. Will be a perfect addition to my winter read alouds.

Well done story that covers some new territory in a very literary way. Even the packaging of this book, the grade of paper, the selection of color, lend to the setting of the book. I felt cold while I read it! I enjoyed reading how Messner got the idea for the book while on a bus during a field trip. I can imagine that after reading this to students, they won't look at the snow-covered ground quite the same way, although I wouldn't be surprised if some are afraid they are stepping on an unsuspecting animal!

Nice author notes and descriptions of the animals are included in the back as well.

I appreciated the afterword. Because without it, the story just didn't come across as accurate. This kind of reminded me of Owl Moon. But this was a lot more clunky and wordy and the art didn't pop. The idea was a good one. But the characters didn't come across as characters nor the place a place. Not bad but it could have been better.

I love that this book is tall and skinny and gives readers a glimpse into many animals’ lives during the winter. Especially appreciated the animals facts at the end of the book.
