Good guide to understanding the possibility of staying a hands on engineer and still advancing your career without taking a strong management path.

Good insights about what it means in progress in the tech laddering rather than people management positions.
Although it's of course subjective to the companies and environments you work at, it provides examples and ways to approach different scenarios and what would be the expectations of that role.

It’s not a perfect book, but the reason I gave it so many stars is because other books on this topic have been so much worse. It’s extremely difficult to write about this topic in a way that is generic to apply across companies but still easy to understand, and this book does so admirably well. The writing was very repetitive at times and some of the sub topics would have been better left out. But overall absolutely worth reading and I may even read it again in the future after reading some other books on the topic, since many seem to have been getting published in the past 5 years.

I'm really glad someone wrote this book - it's a new, important, and under-covered topic. This didn't land very well for me though; there was too much content (too many frameworks, too many imperatives under each section, too wordy) and not enough examples (with the exception of a really good one in chapter 3) that I didn't feel like I could see the important stuff.

Really useful book with lots of detailed info about how to progress in a tech role.

I love the definition of Staff Engineer given in this book: the “someone” in “someone should do something.”. Brilliant!

First few chapters were good, the last were a bit too general/high-level.

A book I wish existed at the beginning of my career. Despite what the title says, this is a good primer for working in (tech) organizations and maps out part of the progression as a technical person within the organization. There is a lot of good but slightly disorganized tactical advice on various aspects of a tech career. Would be useful to keep in a shelf as a reference for navigating certain work situations.
