Barbara Gold is a retired CIA Agent and is finding retirement a chore. Going from being in danger on a daily basis to attending a book club to discuss romance novels is not really working out. When one of the book club members is murdered, Barbara has a found a reason to get the gun out of the holster and have some action.
This is a short read, around about 175 pages and told in the first person. Being a thin book, the action is plenty and there is little padding in the writing. For the first time ever, I would have to say a bit more padding in a novel is warranted. It would have allowed the characters to be rounded a bit more and allow the reader to get to know them.
It's a fun read, a quick read and it's okay.

Barbara Gold is a 70-year old grandmother, living in Cheerville, a small town in Conneticut. She also happens to be a retired CIA agent, who didn't leave the agency until they forced her to retire. Anyone with a lick of sense can probably figure out how well those to aspects of Barbara's life are going to mesh, which is: not very. Fortunately, that makes for a fun and cheeky cozy mystery for the reader!
Barbara is a hoot! The things she says to herself, or in her head are really hilarious, and her CIA training and experience mean that when a murder happens at her senior's book club, she's all over it because she finally gets to do something interesting. She is a terrific main character and I liked her a lot!
The mystery itself isn't that complex, and this is a short book, so it's a fast read. What made it extra enjoyable for me was that the main character - almost all the characters actually - are senior citizens. And not stereotypical seniors either [for a change]! Most of these characters have actual sense and are living their lives fairly well, despite their age. They all have their quirks, and their issues, but really, who doesn't, no matter what age group they're in?!
If you like cozies, but are a little tired of most of them starring a 30-something who's just been dumped by her husband and heads home to her tiny hometown to take over some business or other to heal before finding a dead body and having to sort it out, then you might enjoy this book - ESPECIALLY if you happen to be a reader "of a certain age" yourself.
I would definitely read future books in this series.

This was just a short, fun mystery about... a granny with a gun... showing that just because she's retired from espionage work, she doesn't have to let her mind go to waste.
