Funny and fluffy, but I think I wanted to like this more than I actually did?
If I could give this 0 stars, I would.
I really did not enjoy this at all. The only positive was that it was short.
I felt like the characters were completely flat, no character development over the course of the book. In addition, the plot was incredibly predictable. I knew what was going to happen from almost the beginning and was right in all my predictions. Though this is supposed to be about an immigrant, there’s little to no discussion or examination on how this impacts the protagonist other than in the most superficial way. A disappointing read that I would not recommend.

There not a lot to say about this book except that I wished it could have lasted longer. The main character was pretty entertaining and funny and the story unravelled in a way I did not really expect, but enjoyed all the same.
This is an odd little story about a delightfully odd young woman. If Dorothy Parker had been a Malaysian woman living in London, and more inclined to optimism and curiosity than cynicism and despair, she would have been Jade. Told largely through diary entries, this story chronicles Jade’s adventures/misadventures in her witty, hilarious voice. Overall, it’s delightful. I’ll admit I did almost deduct a star for but since that’s a personal preference rather than a fault in the book I decided to keep it at 4.
Spoiler
the surprise pregnancy plot, because I hate those with a passion,
A fun little romp, but sooo light and fluffy... I would have loved more period detail, greater complexity of character, etc. I did love the narrative voice, though - great style, i just wanted more depth.
Generally light and fluffy with hints at more serious issues. Jade's diary entries were maybe a bit contrived—whose unedited diary sounds this much like a novel?—but they were a pleasure to read. And I didn't expect the first half of the story to go in the direction it did, so that was a happy surprise. Overall, a fun, quick read.
