Patroclus was so loved!!!!!!

I've actually read the Richard Lattimore translation of Iliad (and Odyssey), not the Robert Fagles version(s). I read somewhere that the Lattimore version is a more accurate translation, while the Fagles version isn't quite as technically correct but is much easier to read. From reading a portion of Fagles's Odyssey in high school, I would tend to agree with this sentiment.

I personally prefer faithfulness to the original over simplicity, though if you haven't read any translation of Iliad or Odyssey, give any version you want a try. These are classic stories for a reason--they contain powerful themes and are entertaining, as well.

While fascinating to read from a historical and literacy point of view, the book is essentially made up of battles and discussions, often between bickering gods and mortals that becomes tedious very quickly. It only really gets interesting after the death of Pateoclus when the emotional heart and ferocious revenge begin, but this comes two thirds into the story.
