Reads like a fever dream.
There’s something darkly disturbing and dystopian about being turned into a cockroach and the first thing you can think about upon waking is how the hell you are going to go work to pay off the debt of your parents.
Gave me a lot of Corona Quarantine vibes to identify with by being confined to your house and everyone grows cathy and desperate when the situation has no sign of improvement in sight.
Only here the protagonist also gets seen as a piece of filth that deserves to be neglected and die because they made everyone’s life so much worse.
That the family also so easily moves on and focus on their daughter as if they never had a son that was the breadwinner in the first place is just sad.
Yet the novel never feels depressing and has some light touches of humor that makes it quite engrossing.
Good book! Deserves to be a classic.
