I have never highlighted more passages or bookmarked more pages than I did while reading this book. Honestly this review is going to be difficult to write without just quoting the story. Threhan is such a sexy bad-ass that just about everything he says and everything that describes him makes me love him. This review will probably be more Trehan gushing than anything else. If that bothers you, then skip to the end. :-)
Let's just start with Trehan - a centuries old vampire assassin in line for the throne. So yeah, he is pretty good at his job.
"That's the thing about an assassin - wiv each kill, he risks capture or death himself. A long-lived assassin means he wins every single time."
Which of course means he is not used to losing. Ever. So he is understandably upset when Bettina doesn't immediately go to him. But he is not afraid of fighting - and killing - for her. And he proves he's earned every year he's lived.
Oh and did I mention he lives in a library. Not that he has one, but has made the library his bedroom. O_O
He is also very practical:
"Know that I'll kill the Horde vampire for free." At her frown, he explained, "I will require his tent for the duration." And then he was gone.
I have got to stop talking about Trehan, otherwise you will think there are no other characters worth liking in this story. One of MY FAVORITE side characters is Morgana. She is an unapologetic evil bitch - and I love every second she is on the page.
Raum had once asked Bettina, "How can you even tell your godmother loves you?"
"One, because Morgana keeps visiting me in a realm she hates. Two, because I keep surviving the visits ..."
In a distracted tone, Morgana answered, "Do excuse me. Someone needs to die."
I got some strange looks on the airplane when I laughed out loud at that last one. No regrets.
Honestly, anything I say is just going to be me gushing about this book. It was fabulous.

Loved reading this book again, loved these two and their story and the struggles that they have, with the competition for her hand, and I can't wait to reread more!
*First Read August 22nd, 2014*
Yeah, first book in the kinda spin off series Dacians, and the first one where the heroine truly believes she's in love with another guy (Holly doesn't count, because she was dating him, they didn't really love each other) and yeah, just so good!

"do you always drink so much?"
"no, but if it bothers you I'll drink much more often."

Shadow's claim is the first book in the Dacian's series, a continuation of the Immortals After Dark series. It's almost as good as some of her earlier IAD books and the Lothaire and Elizabeth cameo's made me happy.
Shadow's is about Trehan Dacian, the Prince of Shadows and assassin off his realm. He travels to other realms to assassinate those who have wronged Dacia. While hunting one of hie quarries, he finds his vampire bride. Bettina is a orphan Socerei / Demon halfling, Queen of Hearts and Queen of Abbadon. She may be Trehan's bride, but she's in love with another.
To find her a husband / King, her godparents, the demon Raum and Queen of the Socerei, Morgana, have decided to have a contest, a battle to the death for Bettina's hand and kingdom. To win her hand from the man she loves, Trehan defies his realm's rules by showing himself to others so he can compete.
The story was great. I liked watching Bettina regain her strength and courage, with Trehan's support, after being brutalized by Vrekners. My only complain with her is that the girl couldn't see the forest for the trees. She held on to her make believe romance with her life long buddy Caspion for waaaay too long. It became annoying.
All the same, I enjoyed their story. It was a good read and kept me up until 2am on a school night so I could finish it.

It was a fun, quick read. Adult content. Some interesting tournament action. I have not read the IAD series but this stems from that series. The lore is interesting. A good piece of PNR.
Disappointing by Kresley Cole standards and yet I'm dying to read the next book.
It pains me really to rate an IAD book less than 4 stars. but for most of this book I couldn't STAND Bettina. Also I feel like the actual conflict was was solved way too quickly. Trehan had the patience of a Saint when it came to Bet and she treated him so poorly for a large portion of this and it made me uncomfy. So 3.5 stars is my rating and frankly that half star is for the fact this is one of my favourite series and the fact I had the audio. I don't think I would have finished this if I hadn't.

Oh my gosh…. Really Trehan saved this book. I couldn’t stand literally anyone else. Bettina was a whiny little b*tch, Morgana reminded me of Mother Gothel gaslighting and manipulating her at every opportunity, Cas really did the LEAST to thwart Bettina’s unrequited feelings. I mean if sleeping with a different woman every night and then flaunting those affairs in het face didn’t spell it out for her, really nothing could. And really Cas enlisting in this competition just egged her on 🤦🏼♀️ this book really was way too long and if I had been Trehan, I would’ve left Bettina to sleep in the bed she had made
