Finally a heroine with normal body proportions. I know we're talking mythical creatures but it makes them that much harder to relate to when they are the most beautiful creatures in all the world! But anyway this was a nice change of pace from Lothaire who was unbelievable high handed and evil. Trehan was all about using honey rather than vinegar and it was pretty charming. The tournament in the story kept things interesting always nice to have a good competition to keep the plot moving. Anyway a five star rating from me! A new favorite from Kresley Cole.
Leave it to Kresley to start a book with the biggest bang!
First of all, the prologue was to die for! No pun intended. It was literally gruesome and terrifying to have read the heroine's deathly encounter which was admittedly, an excellent way to capture a reader's attention. But my next point is rather disappointing..
The prologue mislead me in believing that we have yet another kick ass chick set for revenge on what happened to her, or something like that. I kept waiting for action packed moments where the heroine was involved but nope! Instead I found out that Bettina Abaddon was a 22 year old coward of a Sorceri immortal. She's basically the worst female sorceress in the Lore! It's a big shame to have such power coursing through the veins of someone with low self esteem and cowardice. Okay, maybe I am a little biased over weak women but still. I actually thought Emmaline Troy's ([b:A Hunger Like No Other|14384|A Hunger Like No Other (Immortals After Dark, #2)|Kresley Cole|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1327887213s/14384.jpg|16422]) timidness was a lot better. I hate to say this but, [a:Kresley Cole|4428|Kresley Cole|http://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1328377628p2/4428.jpg], I don't appreciate the consistency of Bettina's weakness. I think every Lore women should have a little femme fatale streak even with their weak personalities. But then again, that's just me.
Then we have.. Trehan Daciano.
What can I say, the guy's one of a kind.
He's cold and calculated, and like most of the Lore males who've found their mates, very dedicated on pursuing his female. I've found his battle scenes compelling.. It made me imagine how it would look like to actually see his skills and the seemingly calm but ruthless look on his face when he strikes a blow. I adore the character that is Trehan Daciano but he stays only second to Lothaire in my list.
Overall, Shadow's Claim was a joy to read. I found the love story of this book less intense than those from the IAD series but it still has the IAD calibre, of course. I wish there were a lot of scenes where Nix was present, though.

2018: I think i've mentioned this in a few reviews, but my favorite books are the ones that give me a physical stomach ache. Hear me out: The books that have this hold on me are ones that have two characters that are perfectly paired for each other than encounter an obstacle that is maybe avoidable, but believable as one is holding back or sacrificing for the other without their knowledge. Trehan is a good man who loves Bett (also, Tina is a stupid nickname for Bettina and that alone should make Cas not good enough for her). Cas is a tool who not only really puts Bett in the friend zone (she doesn't listen to him either, so for them, the friend zone is a real place) but also holds her to deeply unfair double standards. Tre works hard to win the contest, her heart, her safety, and the stability of his home while not wanting to show anyone what he's doing. On the opposite side, Bett fights for her courage and independence against ancient and unbeatable odds.
Also, public sex shaded by Dacian myst? Hell yes.

Aww! I love that they are weapon nerds. I wish they had better communication skill. I also really dislike Caspion, but I'm sure Kresley will change my mind later.

The thirteenth book in the Immortals After Dark series and the first book in the Dacians sub-series, featuring Trehan Daciano, the Prince of Shadows and Bettina, a half-demon, half-sorceri Princess.
Well, this was enjoyable enough, the tournament was interesting, as were some of the competitors (and as I discovered, the later fall out from it). Bettina was a bit of a so/so character for me – there were times when I liked her, other times when I didn’t so much. It was hard because of her character flaw and she worked through some of the stuff that annoyed me, but not all.
I do like the sorceri storylines though, because I just love that they’re not entirely “good” characters. Not that any of the immortals are, but I love that they’re greedy for gold and have few qualms about doing what needs to be done.
I’m a big assassin lover (as in the type of character, not actually) so Trehan was a pretty decent hero, right up until the misunderstanding. *eye roll*
By this point, 13 books in, I’m well familiar with the patterns and formula of these books. The characters kiss then oral and then sex (approx. 75% through) in about the same places through the story, and almost (or possibly always, my recollection isn’t that good) after sex they have the black moment / fall out. What keeps the books readable for me since I’m not super keen on the formulaic approach to series writing, is that the characters, setting and storylines are fresh. Not all the characters are my cup of tea, as with Bettina in this one, and not all stories set me on fire, but I do enjoy the build towards the Accession and the thread throughout each book that builds towards it.
Not a stand out one in the series for me, but enjoyable.

I love all of Cole's books. But, so far out of the seven books I have read, this one has the most compelling, page turning plot. In general I love Cole's books because the characters are not static like some other series about similar subjects. As far as the genre, Cole is my new favorite.
This doesn't have the zany pacing or humor of most Kresley Cole books but it's still a very good paranormal romance.
Loved this book..kept me guessing until the very end..loved the love triangle !! Read it now!!
I really like the way this book dealt with PTSD, and healing from it. Bettina and Trehan were good together, even if Bettina was very fickle about her feelings through most o the book. Salem was very entertaining. Also, I’m very glad we got to see more of characters from previous books, specifically Elizabeth and Lothaire.
