Well I’ve read this one three times now and I still think it’s one of my favorites. This series is just so damned enjoyable…melodrama, action, violence, sexy times, and every kind of paranormal creature you could want mixed up in a world that is both castles and condos. What’s not to love?
Anytime I need a comfort food read I pick up one of the books in this series (usually the earlier ones because after this book the quality starts to decline slightly)…they never disappoint!

I devoured this book so quickly. Kresley Cole is my favorite author and I could read her books any day. This is the first book in a new series, but she slipped in characters from "Immortals After Dark", which made very happy. I liked the male protagonist very much, and learned to like the female protagonist. I wasn't ultimately worried because I fully believed the author would solve the love triangle and she did. I wish the princess would realize how wonderful her mate was and forget about her "best friend" earlier, but whatever. It was very suspenseful, and I was always guessing at what would happen next.

Caspion pissed me off the entire time and it irked me that Bettina couldn't see what a glorious alpha male she had in Trehan. I love how Cole gives each of her characters a talent that makes them very special. Bettina was a metallurgist who made sneaky jewelry. I loved when they revealed the identity of her patroness. I was happy to see Bettina as a strong, decisive queen who was revered by her people. But she couldn't quite get her love life together? Priorities...
My previous review still stands and I'm addicted to the Dacians. I want to read all about them. I got a glance at Lothaire as king with Elisabeth. All I want is Kosmina's story. That's all I want. It's been two years. I need another installment of the Dacians. Please.

Manchmal braucht es einfach einen Wohlfühl-Reread bei einem Band einer Reihe, wo du genau weißt, was du bekommst, wenn die Bücher, die du zum ersten Mal liest, gerade an einer Stelle stehen, wo sie drohen, dir das Herz zu brechen.
Auch "Braut der Schatten" spielt nach altbekanntem Muster, allerdings in einer fremden Dämonarchie und entsprechend tauchen nur wenige der bekannten Charaktere aus den bisherigen Bänden auf: Nix und Sabine haben Rollen ganz am Rande, außerdem gibt es einen Ausblick auf Werwölfe und den Band von Lanthe. Zudem werden hier andere Dakier vorgestellt, nicht nur Trehan Dakiano, der Love Interest, und es ist zeitlich in "Lothaire" verwoben.
Bettina ist ein Halbling - halb Dämon, halb Sorcera, auch wenn sie von den Dämonen eigentlich nicht viel abbekommen hat. Eigentlich fast gar nichts ... bis auf die "Fähigkeit", dass sie wie ein Dämon beschworen werden kann und das große Plotproblem, dass als sie als Prinzessin von Abbadon nicht ganz geeignet erscheint und einem Turnier zugestimmt hat, in dem es als ersten Preis um ihre Hand geht. Ginge es nach Bettina, dann wäre ihr bester Jugendfreund Caspion der Erwählte, aber der zeigt eher Interesse an sämtlichen anderen Frauen der Mythenwelt und hat zudem noch ein winziges Problem ... das in Gestalt von Assassine Trehan Dakiano in die Welt von Bettina tritt, um Caspion zu töten.
Ich fand den Plot und die um das Turnier herumgesponnene Geschichte recht unterhaltsam. Wie schon am Anfang der Reihe das mythische Rennen sind es solche Ereignisse, die den Love Stories etwas mehr Unterhaltungswert geben, als wenn es einfach nur ums "Kriegen sie sich, kriegen sie sich nicht" geht. Negativ ist für mich etwas die Paarung: ich mag weder die Vampire besonders gern (ich kann mich nicht für Team Dämon oder Team Werwolf entscheiden), noch die Sorcera. Gegen Bettinas Patentante habe ich eine richtige Abneigung entwickelt und auch Sabine, die hier nur am Rande auftritt, mochte ich in ihrem eigenen Buch nicht. Sie sind mir einfach zu schrill und oberflächlich. Obwohl das ein generelles Problem von Cole ist, die ihre Charaktere immer nach dem grundlegend selben Schema aufbaut. Bettina wird allerdings noch relativ greifbar und vor allem Trehan, der grüblerische, logische Assassine, war eine gute Abwechslung zu den manchmal nur noch triebgesteuerten Männchen in "Immortals after dark".
Nicht der beste Band, aber auch nicht der schlechteste, und da sie so eng zusammenhängen, werde ich auch gleich noch Lothaire anhängen. Geschichten, die mich hier übrigens neugierig machen und die ich später gern lesen würde: Wie ist Caspion nach Dakien gekommen und was hat er dort getrieben? Wie wird es Kosmina ergehen, wenn sie das Reich wirklich verlässt? (Hoffentlich nicht, um Nymphen zu infiltrieren, obwohl die Idee wirklich witzig ist.) Und was ist mit dem Sylphen passiert, der einst ein Phantom war? Diese Spezies finde ich besonders interessant.

Scorching. Hot. Oh, and the story is also masterfully written. If you haven't read the Immortals After Dark series, than you should first start there. You won't be disappointed; it is one of the best paranormal romance series out there. This is a spin-off from that series, and you'll see some of the other characters from I.A.D in here as well. All in all, this is near the top of my 'favorite books in the series' list. Super can't wait till the next book!
Trehan deserves better IMO. I typically really enjoy these books, but just could not for the life of me get past Bettina. I’ve never met anyone so annoying. All that Cas business should’ve stopped wayyyyy before half way thru the book smh.
