Recommended by the great Prairie Lights so I took a step outside my usual genre comfort zones to give mystery a try... didn't work out for me. I loved the premise but was bored by the actual book and returned it to the library rather than torture myself into finishing it. Stopped at page 111. More blaaaaah than baaaah.

Looks like the venue for book club doesn't have enough room for me this month, so I'll share my thoughts here.
The idea of this book (sheep solving a mystery) seems utterly silly. The sheep as characters, however, actually work very well. They react to events and understand them in a way that feels, well, sheepish. And I found that genuinely entertaining at times. Ultimately though, the plot meanders and gets lost in sheepish asides a little too often. On top of that the resolution of the mystery is completely contrived and not something the reader could've seen coming. It was an interesting idea and well executed in some aspects, but I can't say I enjoyed the book very much.

Sheep solve a murder. Loved it.
Moderate: Death
Minor: Suicide
This was such a fun book. Who would have thought sheep could be so interesting. i kept thinking of Babe, when he said that sheep were not stupid. I wish she would write another one.

A murder mystery where the murder is solved by SHEEP! Gah the concept alone gets a billion stars, and the sheep POVs were as quaint and delightful as you might imagine. Sadly, some major flaws make my overall rating less than stellar: an overwriting of vague philosophical sheep musings that don’t contribute to the plot and only serve to confuse things, an unsatisfying revelation of who committed the murder, and LOTS of loose ends that are never tied up (including establishing the parentage of a central character, when that questionable parentage is essential to the mystery). Still, particularly in this political climate, I was happy to escape into the perspectives of wooly, happy sheep for a bit!

This books is quite silly, but quite lovely. Highly recommended! Especially if you enjoy mystery novels and think that sheep are charming creatures.
